Hair care tips: Choose the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair

In order to keep your hair healthy, it is important to select the correct shampoo and conditioner for your hair type.

Natural ingredients like argan oil, tea tree oil, and keratin are beneficial for maintaining the health of your hair.

To avoid damage, stay away from shampoos and conditioners with harsh chemicals, like sulfates and parabens.

Make sure you’re also using shampoo and conditioner correctly. For most hair types, shampoo only your roots and the top of your hair, and condition only the ends.

You can also ‘double shampoo’, which is shampooing your hair twice before conditioning it. This makes sure all the dirt and oil are entirely removed from your scalp and hair.

Protect your hair from heat damage

Using hot styling tools such as curlers, straighteners, and hair dryers on a regular basis can damage your hair.

To reduce heat-damaged hair, it is best to limit the use of heat styling and always use a heat-protection hair product before styling. Try to let your hair air dry instead of blow-drying it.

Hair care tips: Get regular trims

Maintaining the health of your hair requires regular upkeep through trims to ward off split ends and breakage.

Get a trim every 6-8 weeks to keep split ends from worsening and damaging your hair further. This is a very good hair care tip for long hair, especially.

The frequency of trims may vary depending on the type and condition of your hair.

Eat a healthy diet

It’s recommended to eat foods that are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. This includes leafy greens, fish, nuts, and berries.

Drink plenty of water

Healthy hair requires adequate hydration and vitamins to remain in good condition.

When your body is lacking in moisture, it will prioritise where to send the needed hydration, leaving your hair in a vulnerable state. This can lead to stunted growth, dryness, and frayed ends.

Make sure to drink at least 6-8 cups of fluid a day. Read this NHS article on why it’s important.
